Así, hoy descubrimos que el telescopio espacial Hubble – esa máquina maravillosa – ha logrado obtener la primera foto de familia de la Estrella Polar, bajo cuyo brillo aparentemente solitario se esconden tres astros independientes. La compañera más brillante de Polaris A, conocida como Polaris B, se encuentra bastante alejada y puede observarse con un telescopio modesto, mientras que la que hoy vemos por primera vez, Polaris Ab, se mantiene tan pegada a ella que sólo sabíamos de su existencia por los efectos de su campo gravitatorio sobre el movimiento de Polaris A. Por decirlo de algún modo, es como si hubiésemos deducido la estatura y corpulencia del hombre invisible observando los movimientos de una dama que bailase con él un agarrao.
En realidad, la mayor parte de las estrellas de nuestro entorno forman parte de sistemas dobles, tríos, cuartetos, quintetos y agrupaciones todavía más nutridas, aunque la posibilidad de que las veamos por separado depende de sus brillos relativos, la distancia entre ellas y lo lejos que se encuentran de nosotros. Muchas se localizan fácilmente, aunque quizá sean Alcor y Mizar, en el fungueiro del carro de la Osa Mayor las que forman la pareja más desapegada del cielo, fácilmente accesible para el ojo avizor.

Están solas y no. Y tras echarle un vistazo a la órbita que sigue el amante de Mízar, veo que los amantes siderales tienen un comportamiento parecido al de los terrestres: vienen y van.
Y ahora una confesión terrible. En la foto de la constelación de la Osa Mayor, sé que debería ver un carro (y por las noches es así). Pero en la página que enlaza veo a King Kong (y no, a la página no le pasa nada), lo cual dice mucho de mi estado mental. A ver si me bajo un test de manchas y así veo lo último de Tim Burton.
